Note:  This test should be used for arterial specimens only.

Specimen Requirements

Draw arterial blood in a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube(s). (Hemolyzed specimen, serum, or specimen not separated from cells within 30 minutes of draw is not acceptable.) Spin down, separate plasma from cells within 15 minutes of draw, place in separate plastic vials, and send 2 mL (minimum volume:  1 mL) of potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride plasma refrigerated.


Alternate sample:

Green top, lithium heprin whole blood.  Put on ice immediately after blood draw and send 2mL (minimum 1mL)

to the lab 

Reference Values

0.5-1.6 mmol/L

Note:  Reference values may be elevated 20% to 50% after meals.
