Methodology

Urine Dipstick/Refractometer/Microscopic Examination

Test includes WBC, RBC, color, clarity, pH, protein, glucose, blood, ketone, bilirubin, nitrite, leukocyte esterase, urobilinogen, specific gravity, and microscopic examination by reflex.

Note:  If patient’s insurance is Medicare, an Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) may be required. See “Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN)” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions.”

Reflex Information:

Microscopic examination will be performed if indicated on request form.

Culture will be performed if indicated on request form, and WBC is >5/hpf, and bacteria is ≥2+.

Specimen Requirements

10 mL (minimum volume:  2 mL) from a fresh voided urine collection in a sterile urine container. No preservative. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Specimen is stable for 2 hours at ambient temperature or 12 hours refrigerated at 2° C to 8° C.
